Resident Reflections

Serving as a Faith Journey

Hank Kadel

Janaury 2009

When I was offered the Chairmanship of the Landis Homes Residents' Council last year, I felt like a reluctant dragon; feeling honored that someone believed I was qualified to fulfill this responsibility, but also humbled as I examined my own qualifications. After much prayer and soul searching, I felt it was my Christian duty to do whatever I could to serve Landis Homes wherever I was needed.

Thus, I embarked in my faith journey, asking God's guidance and strength to answer His call to service. As I studied Roberts Rules of Order for the proper way to conduct meetings, I was astounded that it was not as complicated as I had anticipated. That was a beginning, and each time I had to initiate a new phase of responsibilities including preparation for special meetings, and organizing residents to help in areas beyond my qualifications.

Anticipating these new challenges was at times overwhelming, but the rewards of hard work that came back to me were far greater than I could have imagined. Getting to know more residents, their capabilities and willingness to serve, made me realize that God was at work in our community.

Let me close by saying that most individuals have great capacity to reach for the stars even if they feel they are not qualified. When you are asked to serve, let your answer be "Yea, Yea!"
