Things Don't Just Happen
Katherine Hershey, Resident

Landis Homes! Do we as residents realize all the blessing involved in living in this place? How often do we think about all the work behind the scenes to make our life here enjoyable? Things don't "just happen!"
Serving on several committees including the Fun & Fellowship and Spiritual Life committees, being a Caring Team leader, and assisting in some activities makes me aware of the fact that things don't just happen. Many persons work together to serve others by making things available for their enjoyment.
Even after living here for almost 16 years, I do not cease to be amazed and be very grateful for the attractiveness and cleanliness of our well-kept facilities. Are we thankful for all those who are responsible to see that happen?
Volunteering by setting tables in the dining room and serving as a desk receptionist is not hard work, but it is work that is necessary to the smooth running operation of Landis Homes.
Being part of the Grandpal program with Hinkletown Mennonite School helps me try to "think young" again.
Visiting in the healthcare area causes me to be aware of the care given there. Almost always our visits must be briefly interrupted by a nurse or other worker with a necessary duty for the comfort of the resident.
Recently I heard someone say, "The only way we can serve God is to serve people." That seems to be a true statement. An example and challenge to continue is found in Mark 10:45. "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." We can never give our lives as He did for our salvation, but we can give time and energy to serve Him.
