Resident Reflections

Scenes of Serving

SCENE 1 - The door to our apartment closed. As I walked through the West campus towards Healthcare, my heart flooded with prayers. "Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to serve you tonight. You are allowing me these 8 hours to serve you by serving those who need me. Let me know your will! Give me wisdom and help me to do the right thing!" As I enter the door to Healthcare my prayer continues. "I want to be a blessing to those with whom I work side by side, some who may have problems and heartaches. Give me understanding." I'm grateful for this opportunity of service which came to me! I never cease to be amazed by the numerous others who serve day and night. What a tremendous witness.

SCENE 2 - Fellowship Day, aptly named. The many yellow shirts are a witness to the mission of the day, with Administration, staff, residents, and friends, doing what needs to be done in the spirit of love. The oven doors open as I put in thousands of potatoes to bake for the BBQ. Many friends from far and near respond to the need of the Caring Fund.

SCENE 3 - I enter my apartment and return a call that is on the blinking message machine. This call was unheard of. Would I accept a position to the Landis Homes Board of Directors? Why me? I am fairly new to campus. Where did anyone find my name? I knew no one on the Board. This truly needed prayer consideration. It's an awesome responsibility to be a representative for residents. Should I believe it to be a God-thing? Through serving on the Landis Homes Board of Directors I have learned much including that they care about us and our comfort in retirement. The Board appreciates the day-by-day interaction of staff with resident activities, and discusses whether actions are Christlike. Residents have heard much about strategic planning. The Board's top priority is to keep the Landis Homes community strong. I am humbled to be a part of this community.

SCENE 4 -- When I went to volunteer I learned of an opportunity to sew backs on comforts. Certainly I had no inkling how this project would "rearrange" our apartment! My husband, Gerald, has been most gracious and feels he is part of the mission. Who else stores a roll of batting in the bathtub? Since I began doing this, a total of 1061 comforts were distributed by MCC to warm those in need throughout the world. Thanks also goes to the ladies who sewed and provided tops, or knotted and hemmed them.

When Landis Homes became home to us in 2004, we didn't realize the full extent of the blessings that would be ours. Not only did we have a comfortable home, but through the years have met many employees here with the "heart of a servant." These friends have laughed and cried with us during unexpected joys and sorrows. If they've ever been annoyed with us (like times when we would forget our key), they never showed it but acted as though we did something special for them. Each one who helped us in so many ways brought us joy.

Thank you and God's blessing to all of you, our special servants and friends
